How to free up space on iPhone when storage is full

iPhone storage full? Start with Apple's free tools in Settings, then clear chat attachments, near-identical photos and Recently Deleted.

An iPhone showing the iPhone Storage screen with a nearly full bar

Your iPhone says storage is almost full, and the update won't install. The quickest way to free up space on iPhone is to open Settings › General › iPhone Storage, see what is actually large, and work down from the top of that list. Photos are usually near the top. Messages is often the surprise.

  • Settings › General › iPhone Storage shows what takes the room, app by app, with Apple's own recommendations above the list.
  • Deleted photos sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days and keep using space until you empty that album.
  • If you use iCloud Photos, Optimize iPhone Storage often frees more than any cleanup.
  • Photos and videos from iMessage and group chats can add up to several gigabytes inside Messages.

Start in iPhone Storage, not in Photos

The bar at the top of Settings › General › iPhone Storage splits your space into apps, photos, Messages, iOS and System Data. On a full phone it takes a few seconds to load. Below it, iOS lists a few recommendations and then every app, sorted by size, so the first five rows are where your space went.

System Data is the gray part that worries people. It holds caches, logs and temporary files that iOS manages itself, and no App Store app can clear it. A cleaner app that promises to shrink System Data is promising something it can't do. It usually gets smaller on its own after a restart, or once the phone has some free room again.

  1. Step 1

    Open iPhone Storage

    SettingsGeneraliPhone Storage

Wait for the bar to fill in, then note the three or four biggest apps.

  2. Step 2

    Take the recommendations that fit

iOS may suggest Offload Unused Apps, which removes apps you haven't opened in a while but keeps their documents and data. The icon stays on your Home Screen, and the app reinstalls when you tap it.

  3. Step 3

    Review large Messages attachments

    SettingsGeneraliPhone StorageMessages

Tap Review Large Attachments to see the videos and photos from your chats, largest first. Swipe left to delete one, or tap Edit to pick several. This removes them from the conversation. Copies you saved to Photos stay.

  4. Step 4

Keep messages for a year, not forever

    SettingsAppsMessages

Under Message History, set Keep Messages to 1 Year. iOS asks before it deletes older messages and their attachments, so read that prompt before you confirm.

  5. Step 5

    Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage

    SettingsAppsPhotos

With iCloud Photos on, choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-size originals stay in iCloud, the iPhone keeps smaller versions, and the original downloads when you open a photo. It only works if your iCloud plan has room for the whole library.

  6. Step 6

    Empty Recently Deleted

    PhotosUtilitiesRecently Deleted

Open the album with Face ID or your passcode, tap Select, then Delete All. This is the step that gives the space back.

Deleting photos doesn't free space right away

Photos you delete, in Apple's Photos app or in any other app, go to Recently Deleted and stay there for 30 days. Until you empty the album or the 30 days pass, the space stays used. That is why storage often looks unchanged right after a big cleanup.

Need room for an iOS update?

When an update needs more space than you have, iOS can offer to remove some apps for now and reinstall them after the update. Say yes to that before you start deleting photos in a hurry.

Where photos really take the space

Once Optimize iPhone Storage is on, photos are what most people delete by hand. The photos worth deleting are the 14 near-identical frames around the one you love, the burst of your kid blowing out candles and the screenshots you took to remember something once.

Scroll through your screenshots and you'll find 2FA codes you used once, Venmo and Zelle confirmation screens, a boarding pass for a flight that landed in March and a map route to a restaurant. WhatsApp also saves images from your chats to Photos unless you turn off Save to Photos in WhatsApp's own chat settings. A year of group chats adds up.

Photos can find some of this. The Duplicates album under Utilities catches exact copies (the duplicate photos guide has the steps), and Screenshots under Media Types collects every screenshot in one place. Neither tells you which screenshot is an old code and which is a receipt you still need, or which of 14 frames is the keeper.

Where Sappari is faster than doing it by hand

I built Sappari for the part Apple leaves to you. Heart the photos you want in Apple Photos, the way you already do, and Sappari finds the near-identical frames around them and lines them up to clear. It also sorts screenshots by kind (one-time codes, transfer confirmations, past boarding passes, chats, map routes) and lists large videos you can compress to HEVC at 1080p or 720p.

On my own iPhone 17e, with 2,900 items, the first scan took 26 seconds and found 10 shoots ready to clear, with 20 near-identical frames worth 128 MB. That's a small library and a small win. If you don't take many photos of the same thing, Sappari won't find much, and Apple's steps above will do more.

If you use iCloud Photos and your plan has room, I think Optimize iPhone Storage beats any cleanup, mine included. Clear photos when the library has grown past what you want to pay for, which is a different problem with its own iCloud storage guide.

Clear the frames around your hearts

The scan is free and shows every number. You can clear 50 items a day and one full shoot without paying. Everything you clear waits in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
